A portable file of papers, tests, or other work.
A cumulative record of strengths & weaknesses.
A way to summarize and demonstrate progress and development in a field.
A Collection of Work
A portfolio allows you to gather in one place work from different courses and extra-curricular activities into one coherent summary of your knowledge, skills, & interests in philosophy.
Value to YOU
Allows you to plan your course of study more intentionally in light of your life and career goals.
Allows you to follow your progress and development from semester to semester.
Provides a ready record of accomplishments to apply to graduate and professional schools or to complete your resume for employment.
Overall, it strengthens YOUR degree.
Value to OTHERS
Allows the department to improve the breadth and depth of its major program.
Allows the department to evaluate the effectiveness of its courses & teaching.
Helps us understand who we are teaching & and how best to help each major realize his or her goals as a philosophy major.

Resume (including courses, reading, and other activities

History (core knowledge of people, positions and terms)

Content
Based on your work in courses.
It is not NEW work or EXTRA work but an organization of work you have done or will do in philosophy or other courses.
It is based not on a single semester but on every semester you are registered as a philosophy major.
How It Works
You will maintain your portfolio folder.
Each semester you will provide a copy of your portfolio to the major advisor BEFORE early registration.
Advising will include conversation about your goals and how the department can help you realize them.
In the spring of your senior year you will submit your final completed portfolio.
